"A sort of glass wherein beholders do generally discover everyone's face but their own" - Jonathan Swift
Interdisciplinary resources on teaching satire...
for high school Art and English teachers
Some resources were contributed by Barb Hoklin, English teacher;
the rest was created and compiled by Petra Wonders, Visual Arts teacher.
Satire, irony, parody, spoof... You can call it what you like, but the truth is that though students are used to teasing each other, and they enjoy humor and comedies; they struggle to understand these same concepts in art and literature. The idea for compiling these resources, especially the visual ones, came from my first attempt to have students understand and create visual satire, with mixed results and a lot of blank looks, and finding that the English teacher had the same struggle. The more connections kids have from multiple disciplines, the more complex concepts become understandable and masterable. Hopefully this is a resource you can use to find specifically media examples of satire, or as a place to send your students to do some exploring and deepen their understanding of this rich genre.
